Rodeo
Title: Rodeo
Medium: Hand-colored line etching
Subject Matter: This piece captures the spirited essence of a carousel horse, but with a unique, dynamic twist that justifies its title. The horse is depicted in a lively, bucking pose, complemented by the bold blue and red accents of its saddle blanket and reins.
A distinctive feature of all of Susan’s classic carousel pieces is the pole supporting the figure: instead of the standard, polished brass of a traditional carousel, she has replaced it with the striking red and white spiral of a barber's pole. While a standard brass pole is static, the barber's pole is historically recognized for its mesmerizing, spinning motion. James uses this established symbol of perpetual rotation, suggesting a hidden layer of kinetic energy beneath the surface.
Rodeo is part of a five-horse series, which includes: Outside Jumper, Outside Stander, Top Knot, Rodeo, and Cavalry Charger. The full classic set of seven carousel images includes two menagerie animals: “Merry Goes Round” (reindeer), and “Macabilly” (goat.) In 2024, Susan created a re-imagination of these five horses, and an additional four more, in the El Camino photogravure series. “El Camino” (The Path) is also the title of a larger image of all nine carousel horses who have broken free of the carousel.
Printmaking Process: hand-printed, hand-painted intaglio etching
