Range Rivals
Title: Range Rivals
Artist: Susan James
Medium: Polymer photogravure
Subject Matter: Photographed at the Onaqui Mountain HMA in May 2025 by Susan James, "Range Rivals" portrays a visceral clash for dominance between two bachelor stallions on the Utah desert. This polymer photogravure honors a legacy that is uniquely American; while the Spanish brought horses to the continent in the 1500s, they were technically reintroducing a native species to its ancestral home, as the horse originally evolved in North America millions of years ago. By isolating this split-second test of strength, the image preserves the raw, sculptural energy of a desert ritual as old as the landscape itself. Through the rich texture of the photogravure process, this edition celebrates the enduring spirit of the Onaqui herd—a living link to the deep history and rugged sovereignty of the American West.
