Framed: Outside Stander
Title: Outside Stander
Artist: Susan James
About This Piece:
This striking hand-colored etching by Susan James is titled "Outside Stander," which precisely references the type of carousel horse depicted. An Outside Stander is a stationary figure found on the outer ring of a carousel, typically the most elaborately carved and decorated because it faces the public. The horse's body is draped in a beautiful lattice of connected rosebuds, the hem of which is finely adorned with blue bows. A partially unrolled roll of golden fabric, decorated with tassels at the corners, serves as the saddle. A loosely twisted piece of the same golden material forms the breast piece. A piece of blue silk ribbon is artfully woven around and draped into the horse's dark, flowing tail. Like her other carousel pieces, the horse is anchored by the visually arresting red and white spiral barber’s pole, suggesting a hidden layer of kinetic energy in an otherwise static figure.
Outside Stander is part of a five-horse series, which includes: Outside Jumper, Outside Stander, Top Knot, Rodeo, and Cavalry Charger. The full classic set of seven carousel images includes two menagerie animals: “Merry Goes Round” (reindeer), and “Macabilly” (goat.) In 2024, Susan created a re-imagination of these five horses, and an additional four more, in the El Camino photogravure series. “El Camino” (The Path) is also the title of a larger image of all nine carousel horses who have broken free of the carousel.
