Title: Outside Jumper

Artist: Susan James

About This Piece: This enchanting piece is a hand-painted etching titled "Outside Jumper" by Susan James, created early in her artistic career. The title itself is a charming nod to the specific style of carousel horse depicted, known as an "outside jumper" due to its extended, mid-leap pose often found on the outer ring of a carousel. James has brought this classic fairground figure to life with delicate hand-painting, adding soft hues to the horse's flowing mane and tail, and adorning its body with intricate floral garlands.

Outside Jumper is part of a five-horse series, which includes: Outside Jumper, Outside Stander, Top Knot, Rodeo, Cavalry Charger. The full classic set of seven carousel images includes “Merry Goes Round”, and “Macabilly”. In 2024, Susan created a re-imagination of these five horses, and an additional four more, in the El Camino photogravure series. “El Camino” (The Path) is also the title of a larger image of all nine carousel horses who have broken free of the carousel.
