Image 1 of 1
Framed: Macabilly # 1
Title: Macabilly
Artist: Susan James
About This Piece: This charming piece is a hand-colored etching by Susan James, titled "Macabilly"—a witty portmanteau combining Macabee and billy goat. Departing from the typical carousel horse, James depicts a dynamic goat figure mounted on the signature red-and-white barber's pole. This carousel goat is richly decorated with symbols for Chanukah: it wears a ceremonial tallit draped over its back, the saddle blanket is adorned with olive leaves (referencing the eight days the oil lasted), and hanging from its harness are gelt pieces and dreidels. The inclusion of an oil lamp with the impression of a menorah and a small hammer (symbolic of the Macabees) transforms the festive carousel animal into a unique and playful celebration of the Jewish holiday.
Macabilly is a companion piece to the Christmas reindeer carousel image titled “Merry Goes Round.” It is also part of a larger seven piece series that includes five carousel horses: Outside Jumper, Outside Stander, Top Knot, Rodeo, and Cavalry Charger.
