Framed: Il Ballo dei Pavone # 11
Title: Il Ballo dei Pavone (The Dance of the Peacocks)
Artist: Susan James
About This Piece: Susan made the plate for this piece while studying printmaking in Florence, Italy in June 2000. The central figures are inspired by Rafael’s painting “Primavera”, while the surrounding peacocks were inspired by the glazed terra cotta sculptures of Luca and Andrea della Robbia. Brightly colored della Robbia sculptures were often created ‘en tondo’ (round) and depict a central image surrounded by a wreath of foliage or artifacts that contribute to the story told by the central image.
Il Ballo dei Pavone is a combination of hand-drawn etching and aquatint on copper plate. Each print is hand-colored in vibrant shades of water color paint. The image is further embellished with over-washes of metallic watercolor in several areas.
