About This Piece: A 'Botanica' is a place where one can find plants and herbs that restore health and spirit. Historically, the Foxglove has been associated with both the Virgin Mary and the faerie folk. It figures prominently in both folklore and traditional medicine, but is deadly poisonous if improperly handled. However it can heal as well as harm. Compounds are extracted from its leaves to make Digitalis, a medication that is used to regulate heartbeat.
Botanica II is printed from an etched plate created using the 19th century process called Photogravure. The source photo was taken May 2018 at Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, IL by Susan James.

Mat and Frame Description: Double mat, white mat over cream mat with 1/8 reveal. Mats are mounted over print margins, revealing the characteristic embossing of the intaglio plate. Surrounding antique gold-colored frame is decorated in repeating swirls that resemble flower petals. Frame and mat choices selected to complement the artwork.
